Thalassophobia

Mental and Behavioural Disorders

Thalassophobia is a specific phobia defined by persistent and intense fear of deep or vast bodies of water, including the open ocean, seas, and large lakes. It is distinct from aquaphobia, the broader fear of water itself, because thalassophobia centers on the scale and depth of a body of water rather than on water as a substance. People affected may fear being far from shore, the unknown beneath the surface, large waves, or simply the sense of vastness and depth, and for a clinical diagnosis the fear must persist for more than six months and cause meaningful distress or avoidance. Researchers point to a possible evolutionary basis, since early humans depended on land and had reason to be wary of deep water, alongside cultural reinforcement from gothic and supernatural literature and popular films such as Jaws. Personal experience also plays a role: a traumatic incident in or near deep water, a genetic predisposition toward anxiety, or observing fear in a parent or other authority figure can all contribute to its development. Standard treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy, systematic desensitization, and graded exposure therapy, sometimes combined with medications such as SSRIs, beta blockers, or benzodiazepines.
