Thought-action fusion

Mental and Behavioural Disorders

Thought-action fusion, often abbreviated TAF, is the tendency for a person to assume that certain thoughts either raise the likelihood of catastrophic events, called likelihood TAF, or imply that the thinker has an immoral character, called morality TAF. The article defines it more technically as a term covering false beliefs or self-confusing mind wandering that bind a person spontaneous thoughts to imagined latent desires or magical thinking capabilities which the person finds unwelcome. Those imagined desires generally express harmful actions or behaviours, such as compulsions, that the person judges highly possible even though they have never occurred. The entry records the concept as described and is not medical advice or a diagnostic guide.
