A vertebral compression fracture is a collapse of a vertebra. It may be due to trauma or to weakening of the vertebra, as seen in osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, lytic lesions from primary or metastatic tumors, or infection. In healthy people it is most often seen after extreme vertical shocks, such as ejecting from an ejection seat. On lateral plain x-ray films the fractures characteristically appear as wedge deformities, with greater loss of height at the front than at the back. Acute fractures usually present with back pain, while chronic ones, as in osteoporosis, may be silent at first and later lead to back pain, spinal deformity, loss of height and neurologic problems.
