Trichinosis, also known as trichinellosis, is a parasitic disease caused by roundworms of the Trichinella genus. During the initial infection, invasion of the intestines can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain and vomiting. About a week after infection, larvae migrate to muscle tissue, which can cause facial swelling, inflammation of the whites of the eyes, fever, muscle pain and a rash. A minor infection can pass with no symptoms at all. In more severe cases complications can include inflammation of the heart muscle, involvement of the central nervous system and inflammation of the lungs.
