Uterine fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomas or fibromyoma, are benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus. Most affected women have no symptoms, while others may have painful or heavy menstrual bleeding; if large enough, fibroids may press on the bladder, causing a frequent need to urinate, or cause pain during sex or lower back pain. A person can have one fibroid or many, and it is uncommon but possible for fibroids to make it difficult to become pregnant.
