Waxy flexibility is one of the twelve symptoms that can lead to a diagnosis of catatonia. It is a psychomotor symptom that produces a decreased response to stimuli and a tendency to stay in an immobile posture. If an observer moves the arm of a person with waxy flexibility, the arm stays where it was placed until it is moved again, as though the limb were positioned like malleable wax. Attempts to reposition the patient are met by slight, even resistance.
