X-linked ichthyosis, abbreviated XLI, is a skin condition caused by a hereditary deficiency of the steroid sulfatase enzyme, known as STS. It affects between 1 in 2000 and 1 in 6000 males and shows as dry, scaly skin. The cause is a deletion or mutation in the STS gene, and the same defect can occur inside larger deletions that produce contiguous gene syndromes. Treatment is largely aimed at relieving the skin symptoms. The word ichthyosis comes from the Ancient Greek ichthys, meaning fish. The Wikipedia lead does not state an age of onset or give the inheritance in more detail than the name implies, so nothing further is claimed. This is a record of what the source states, not medical advice.
