Yao syndrome, abbreviated YAOS, is an autoinflammatory syndrome, meaning a condition in which the body's inflammatory response is switched on abnormally rather than by an outside infection. It involves episodes of fever together with abnormal inflammation that can affect many parts of the body, and the skin, the joints and the gastrointestinal system are the areas most often involved. The condition was formerly called NOD2-associated autoinflammatory disease, a name that links it to the NOD2 gene, and that older label still appears in the literature. This entry records the condition as a named clinical syndrome and is not medical advice; diagnosis and management belong to a qualified clinician.
