In 1912 the Japanese surgeon Hakaru Hashimoto described a chronic inflammatory disease of the thyroid gland, marked by dense infiltration of lymphocytes into the thyroid tissue, in four patients he had studied. The condition that came to bear his name was not understood at the time as anything other than an unusual form of goiter, and it was only in 1956, decades later, that researchers demonstrated the disease resulted from the body's own immune system attacking the thyroid, identifying it as an autoimmune disorder.
