Hemorrhoids are vascular structures within the anal canal that, in their normal state, form cushions helping to control the passage of stool. They become a disease, commonly called piles, when they become swollen or inflamed, and the signs and symptoms that result depend on which type is affected. Internal hemorrhoids often cause painless bleeding, while external hemorrhoids are more likely to cause pain and irritation.
