A sitz bath is a bath in which a person sits in water that covers only the hips and buttocks, used as a treatment for discomfort or injury in the lower body. It is commonly recommended for conditions such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, recovery from an episiotomy after childbirth, and urinary tract infections, working by keeping the affected area clean and increasing blood flow to promote healing. The name comes from the German word Sitzbad, combining sitzen, to sit, and Bad, bath, and while sitz baths were once used more broadly for hygiene, they are now used mainly for this kind of therapeutic relief.

It is used to relieve discomfort and pain in the lower part of the body, for example, due to hemorrhoids (piles), anal fissures, perianal fistulas, rectal surgery, an episiotomy, uterine cramps, inflammatory bowel disease, pilonidal cysts and infections of the bladder, prostate or vagina.
