Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the white of the eye and lining the inside of the eyelid. It causes redness, itching, discharge, and a gritty sensation in the eye, and can result from viral or bacterial infection, allergy, or irritation. The viral and bacterial forms are highly contagious and spread readily, particularly among children.
