Ankylosing Spondylitis

Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Connective Tissue

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the joints and ligaments of the spine. Persistent inflammation can eventually cause adjacent vertebrae to fuse, leading to reduced flexibility and, in advanced cases, a stooped posture. It typically begins with lower back pain and stiffness in young adulthood and is associated with a specific genetic marker in most affected individuals.
