Origin The mid-1930s
Rheumatology, from the Ancient Greek for flowing current, is the branch of medicine devoted to diagnosing and managing disorders whose common feature is inflammation in the bones, muscles, joints and internal organs. It covers more than one hundred distinct rheumatic diseases, among them arthritis, lupus and Sjögren's syndrome, most of which are autoimmune or inflammatory in origin rather than purely mechanical.
