Origin Formalized as a distinct discipline with the founding of the American Congress on Internal Medicine on 8 January 1915, which four months later founded the American College of Physicians.
The specialty devoted to the prevention, diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases affecting adults' internal organ systems. It emerged from the German concept of innere Medizin, which William Osler is credited with introducing to North America, combining bedside clinical observation with physiology, bacteriology and pathology. It underpins most other adult medical subspecialties, including cardiology, endocrinology and gastroenterology.
