Byrom Bramwell (1847 to 1931) was a British physician and clinical teacher best remembered in Edinburgh. Born at North Shields, he trained at Edinburgh and Paris, returned home as house surgeon and local practitioner, and in 1872 became a lecturer on medical jurisprudence at the Durham College of Medicine. After a spell as physician and pathologist at the Newcastle infirmary he moved to Edinburgh in 1879, where he rose to pathologist, assistant physician and then physician at the Royal Infirmary, retiring from its active staff in 1912. Although mainly a general physician, he built his reputation in neurology, diseases of the heart and blood and disorders of the endocrine organs. His books included Diseases of the Spinal Cord, Intracranial Tumours and the illustrated Atlas of Clinical Medicine. He presided over the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh from 1910 and was knighted in 1924.
