Clindamycin

Antiinfective Agents for Systemic Use

Clindamycin is a small-molecule antibiotic with the molecular formula C18H33ClN2O5S and a molecular weight of about 424.99, recorded in the ChEMBL database as an approved drug whose first approval year is 1970. Its nonproprietary name carries the stem -mycin, which ChEMBL defines as the antibiotics from Streptomyces strains, and ChEMBL records a black box warning for it. The WHO Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical index files it as J01FF01 among the lincosamides of the systemic antiinfectives, as D10AF01 among the antiinfectives for treatment of acne and as G01AA10 among the gynecological antibiotics. ChEMBL marks it for oral use and lists osteomyelitis as an approved indication. The WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, 24th list (2025), carries it in the core list. This entry records classification and approval facts only and is not medical advice.
