Ferric maltol

Ferric maltol is a small molecule iron preparation taken by mouth to treat anemia caused by iron deficiency. ChEMBL records its first approval in 2016 and an oral route, and the WHO Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Index classifies it as B03AB10, among the oral trivalent iron preparations used against anemia in the blood and blood forming organs group. The approved indication recorded for it is anemia. It is not on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines, 24th list, from 2025. Accrufer is a brand name under which it has been sold. It is a comparatively recent entry among the iron products used to replace the body iron that a deficiency has depleted.
