Urokinase is a therapeutic enzyme that has been used as a thrombolytic, a medicine given to break down blood clots. The ChEMBL record describes it as a protein of the urokinase-type plasminogen activator family, and the WHO Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Index files it under B01AD04, in the group of enzymes among the antithrombotic agents of the blood and blood forming organs. ChEMBL records its first approval in 1982 and lists it as given by injection rather than by mouth or on the skin. The approved indication recorded for it is thrombosis, the formation of a clot inside a blood vessel. It is not on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines, 24th list, from 2025. Brand names such as Abbokinase have been sold for it.
