Albert Niemann was a German physician, born in Berlin on 23 February 1880 and died there on 22 March 1921. He was the son of a well-known tenor of the same name, and the two should not be confused. He received his medical doctorate from the University of Strasbourg in 1903 and then trained in pediatrics as an assistant at the Säuglingsheim, an infant home run in Berlin by the Verein Säuglingskrankenhaus. In 1918 he became director of the Säuglingsheim at Berlin-Halensee. His main research concerned metabolism in infancy. Niemann-Pick disease is named for him and Ludwig Pick. In 1920 he wrote Kompendium der Kinderheilkunde, a compendium of pediatrics with special attention to the diseases of infants.
