Alina Margolis-Edelman was a Polish physician, born in Łódź in 1922 to two doctors, who survived the Holocaust and served in the resistance during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. She worked in a ghetto hospital, acted as a courier, and helped carry the commander Marek Edelman out of the burning ghetto, later marrying him. After the war she qualified in medicine and became a pediatrician at the Łódź Pediatric Clinic, specialising in kidney disease and juvenile diabetes. Forced out of Poland during the antisemitic campaign of 1968, she settled in France, joined Doctors Without Borders, and helped found Doctors of the World, serving on missions in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Eastern Europe. In 1990 she returned to Poland and began the association Nobody's Children against child abuse. She died in 2008.
