Werner Leibbrand (1896 to 1974) was a German psychiatrist and medical historian. He showed an early talent for music and languages and considered a career as a pianist, but his father steered him toward medicine and philosophy, and after qualifying as a doctor he specialised in psychiatry. Around 1930 he joined the Association of Socialist Doctors and co-founded a centre for drug addicts, and he was later persecuted by the Nazis. After the Second World War he directed the psychiatric clinic in Erlangen, became professor of the history of medicine there in 1947, and then moved to the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, where he became professor emeritus in 1969. He co-authored major works with his third wife, Annemarie Wettley.
