Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. Its modern form grew out of the late eighteenth and nineteenth century asylum reform movements associated with figures such as Philippe Pinel in France, and it was further reshaped in the twentieth century by psychoanalysis and, later, biological and pharmacological approaches.
