Karl Jaspers was born on 23 February 1883 in Oldenburg in northern Germany and chose medicine as his course of study, graduating with a medical degree in 1909. He began his academic career working as a psychiatrist at the psychiatric clinic of the University of Heidelberg, where in 1913 he published his Allgemeine Psychopathologie, known in English as General Psychopathology, a systematic account of how mental illness can be described and understood. That book made him a central figure in the history of psychiatric method. He later turned from clinical psychiatry toward philosophy, and in 1948 he moved to Basel, where he became a Swiss national after giving up his German citizenship. He died in Basel on 26 February 1969, aged 86, after a stroke.
