Bernhard Naunyn

Pathologists and Anatomists

Bernhard Naunyn (1839 to 1925) was a German pathologist and clinician, born in Berlin. After taking his degree at the University of Berlin in 1863 he became assistant to Friedrich Theodor von Frerichs at the Charité, and later headed medical clinics at Dorpat, Bern, Königsberg and Strasbourg, where he also taught at the Imperial University until 1904. He is remembered for experimental pathology, particularly metabolic pathology, including work on the liver, the pancreas and the excretion of phenol after benzene. With Oswald Schmiedeberg and Edwin Klebs he founded the Archiv für experimentelle Pathologie und Pharmakologie, now Naunyn-Schmiedeberg Archives of Pharmacology. He wrote a treatise on diabetes mellitus and a treatise on cholelithiasis, favoured a strict low-carbohydrate diet for diabetic patients, and in 1906 was the first to use the term acidosis for the accumulation of ketone bodies. Otto Loewi was among his students.
