Colin Munro MacLeod (1909 to 1972) was a Canadian-American microbiologist and geneticist. With Oswald Avery and Maclyn McCarty, he helped demonstrate in 1944 that DNA, not protein, is the molecule responsible for transforming the physical characteristics of bacteria, a finding known as the Avery-MacLeod-McCarty experiment and foundational to establishing DNA as the hereditary material. He later chaired the Department of Microbiology at New York University and advised several United States presidents on science policy.
