Emil Pfeiffer was a German physician and pediatrician, born on 1 March 1846 and died on 13 July 1921. He studied medicine at the universities of Bonn, Wurzburg and Berlin and received his doctorate at Berlin in 1869. As a pediatrician he dealt with questions of infant nutrition and campaigned for the establishment of children's homes and creches. He is known for describing infectious mononucleosis, the Epstein-Barr virus induced infection of the lymphatic tissue that is also called glandular fever, and the disease still bears his name as Pfeiffer's disease.
