Hermann Krukenberg

Surgeons and Perioperative Specialists

Hermann Krukenberg (1863 to 1935) was a German surgeon, described in the reference data of his article as a physician and orthopaedist. He was born in Calbe and died in Wernigerode, and he was a grandson of Peter Krukenberg and a brother of Friedrich Ernst Krukenberg and Georg Krukenberg. He studied medicine at Strasbourg, Bonn and Heidelberg, then worked as an assistant to Friedrich Trendelenburg in Bonn and to Max Schede at the Eppendorf hospital. In 1892 he became manager of a private clinic in Halle, in 1896 he published a Lehrbuch der mechanischen Heilmethoden with the Stuttgart publisher Ferdinand Enke, in 1899 he became chief physician of the municipal hospital in Liegnitz, and from 1907 he ran a surgical private clinic in Elberfeld. As a field doctor in the First World War he developed an operation in which, after a hand has been amputated, the forearm is split so that a grasping movement becomes possible. That operation is known as the Krukenberg plasty.
