Orthopedic Surgery

Surgical Specialties
Origin Nicolas Andry coined the term orthopaedics in 1741; the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons was founded in Chicago in 1933, growing out of the more restricted American Orthopaedic Association of 1887.

The specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system: bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles. The term was coined in 1741 by French physician Nicolas Andry, originally naming a discipline focused on correcting skeletal deformities in children, well before orthopedics became a surgical specialty treating adults and trauma. The field organized professionally in the United States starting with the American Orthopaedic Association in 1887 and expanded into a broader national academy in 1933.
