Franklin Bache (1792 to 1864) was an American medical doctor, chemist, professor and writer from Pennsylvania. He taught chemistry at West Point Academy, the Franklin Institute, the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Jefferson Medical College, and he published several scientific textbooks. With Dr. George Bacon Wood he published a pharmacopoeia in 1830 that became the basis of the U.S. Pharmacopoeia and the U.S. Dispensatory. He was also the first American to carry out original research on acupuncture for the treatment of pain. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin Bache and a great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin. This entry records his teaching, writing and research as a historical matter and is not medical advice.
