Hans Delmotte was a physician from Liege, Belgium, born there on 15 December 1917, who served as an SS doctor at the Auschwitz concentration camp in the branch of the Hygiene Institute of the Waffen-SS and died in 1945. He is recorded in medical history as an example of a physician implicated in Nazi crimes. According to the cited article he at first refused to take part in selections, but by late 1944 he was persuaded to do so. For his dissertation, on the pathological physiology of gastric secretion in typhoid fever, completed in 1944, he took part in typhus experiments on prisoners at Auschwitz. After the camp was evacuated in January 1945 he briefly worked at Dachau, was arrested by American soldiers while trying to return to Belgium, and died of a gunshot wound during transfer to a prison.
