Johann von Dumreicher, whose full name was Johann Heinrich Georg Freiherr Dumreicher von Österreicher (1815 to 1880), was an Austrian surgeon, born in Trieste. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, took his doctorate in 1838, became a lecturer there in 1844, and in 1846 became primary physician of the surgical department at the Allgemeines Krankenhaus. In 1849 he was appointed professor of surgery and head of the surgical clinic. He was known for his work in orthopedic medicine, and his students and assistants included the surgeons Eduard Albert, Wenzel von Linhart and Carl Nicoladoni, the gynecologists Rudolf Kaltenbach and Friedrich Schauta, and the obstetrician Ludwig Bandl. He distinguished himself in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and in 1869 headed a commission for the reform and reorganization of Austrian military medicine. In 1878 he published a treatise on the need for teaching reforms at Austrian medical faculties. He feuded for years with the surgeon Theodor Billroth over medical philosophy and method, and Vienna's Dumreichergasse is named for him.
