Heinrich Christian Friedrich Schumacher (1757 to 1830) was a Danish surgeon, botanist and professor of anatomy at the University of Copenhagen. Born in Glückstadt in Holstein to a sergeant's family, he trained as a regimental surgeon's apprentice and served as a military surgeon before studying at the Theatrum Anatomico-chirurgicum in Copenhagen, where he became prosector and later a surgeon there and at Frederiks Hospital. From 1786 to 1789 he studied in Paris and London, hearing Lavoisier and Jussieu and drawing on the influence of John Hunter. He wrote medical and surgical observations, a textbook of anatomy and a flora of medicinal plants, and his research on molluscs led him to describe several taxa, among them the marine gastropod genus Bufonaria.
