Jon Sudbø, born on 3 May 1961, is a Norwegian dentist and physician who worked as a cancer researcher until he was exposed in 2006 as a scientific fraudster. He graduated in dentistry from the University of Oslo in 1989 and in medicine in 1994, and held posts as a consultant oncologist at the Radium Hospital and as an associate professor at the University of Oslo. In January 2006 it emerged that an article on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and the risk of oral cancer in smokers, published in The Lancet, rested on fabricated patient data. An independent commission found that fifteen of his thirty eight articles published since 1993, including his doctoral dissertation, were fraudulent. He lost his doctorate and his licences in 2006 and later regained restricted authorisations that bar him from research. This entry records a documented case of research misconduct.
