Julius Leopold Pagel was a German physician and historian of medicine, born in Pollnow on 29 May 1851 and died in Berlin on 30 January 1912. He studied at the gymnasium in Stolp and at the University of Berlin, took his medical degree in 1875 and began practice in Berlin the next year. He received the right to teach at the university in 1891, the title of professor in 1898 and in 1902 became assistant professor of the history of medicine. From 1885 he assisted August Hirsch with the Biographisches Lexikon der Hervorragenden Ärzte, edited the Deutsche Ärzte-Zeitung, and in 1901 published his own Biographisches Lexikon Hervorragender Ärzte des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts. His editions and studies of the medieval surgeon Henri de Mondeville, a Handbuch der Geschichte der Medizin of 1902 to 1905 and a book on medical deontology made him a standard reference for medical history. His son Walter Pagel also became a physician and historian of medicine.
