Karol Marcinkowski (1800 to 1846) was a Polish physician born in Posen, in the Prussian partition of Poland, today Poznan. Beyond medicine he was a leading social activist in the Greater Poland region, then called the Grand Duchy of Posen, and a supporter of the programmes of organic work and basic education. He organised the Scientific Help Society, founded in 1841 to provide scholarships for poor young people of the Grand Duchy, and the Poznan Bazaar, a Polish commercial and community building that included a hotel, meeting rooms, crafts and shops. The Poznan University of Medical Sciences and a high school in Poznan are named after him.
