Meyer Löw Schomberg

Generalist and Primary Care Physicians

Meyer Löw Schomberg (1690 to 4 March 1761) was a German physician who moved to London and built a successful practice there. His father Löw Schomberg was also a physician, and Meyer studied classics and then medicine at the University of Giessen, completing his doctorate in 1710. He practised in Schweinsberg, Blankenstein and Metz before settling in London in 1721, where his first employment was a salary from the wardens of the Great Synagogue to look after the poor. The Royal College of Physicians admitted him as a licentiate in 1722 and he became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1726. By 1740 his professional income was said to be 4000 guineas a year. He quarrelled with his contemporary Jacob de Castro Sarmento and with the Royal College of Physicians, became estranged from London's Jewish community, and wrote an essay in Hebrew, Emunat omen, describing his conversion to deism. He had at least seven sons and one daughter, several of whom became physicians, and he was buried at Hackney.
