Albert Freiherr von Schrenck-Notzing (1862 to 1929) was a German physician and parapsychologist, born near Oldenburg. He studied medicine in Munich from 1883, took his doctorate in 1888 with a thesis on the therapeutic use of hypnotism, and practised in Munich from 1889. He visited Nancy to learn the suggestion and hypnosis methods of Bernheim and Liebault, wrote on forensic psychiatry and sexual pathology, acted as court expert, and organized the Third International Congress for Psychology in Munich in 1896. Made financially independent by marriage, he later investigated telekinesis and materialization in a private laboratory, studying mediums such as Eusapia Palladino, Eva C. and the Schneider brothers, and edited the Zeitschrift fuer Parapsychologie from 1926. His work on hypnotism is undisputed in the German national biography, while the question of deception in his medium experiments remains unsettled.
