Georg Friedrich Louis Stromeyer, known as Louis Stromeyer, was a German surgeon born in 1804 and died in 1876 in the same city, Hanover. The son of the surgeon Christian Friedrich Stromeyer, he studied medicine at Gottingen from 1823 and took his doctorate in Berlin in 1826. After travelling through Europe he returned to Hanover in 1828, taught at the surgical school there and founded an orthopedic institute. He later held chairs of surgery at Erlangen, Munich, Freiburg and Kiel, and served as Surgeon General of the Schleswig-Holstein and Hanoverian armies. He is remembered as a pioneer of orthopedic surgery: in 1831 he performed the first subcutaneous tenotomy of the Achilles tendon on a deformed foot, and he helped bring the technique to England through the surgeon William John Little, on whom he operated to correct a clubfoot. His name also survives in the Stromeyer hook, a device used for fractures of the zygomatic arch. This entry rests on the Wikipedia article about him.
