Peter Mansfield

Sir Peter Mansfield (1933-2017) was an English physicist and professor at the University of Nottingham. He shared the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Paul Lauterbur for discoveries concerning magnetic resonance imaging, work that made MRI scanning practical for diagnostic use. He earned a BSc in 1959 and a PhD in 1962 from Queen Mary College, University of London. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1987, knighted in 1993, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Prime Minister in 2009; the asteroid 262972 Petermansfield was named in his honor in 2016.
