Ralph Marvin Steinman was a Canadian physician and medical researcher at Rockefeller University, born on 14 January 1943 and died on 30 September 2011. In 1973, while a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Zanvil A. Cohn at the same university, he discovered and named dendritic cells. The Nobel Committee later credited him with the discovery of the dendritic cell and its role in adaptive immunity, and he was one of the recipients of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. This record rests on the opening summary and the prize announcement in the cited article, and it does not go further into the later science of dendritic cells.
