An Australian pathologist at Royal Perth Hospital who in 1981 began finding spiral-shaped bacteria in stomach tissue samples he examined and, working with Barry Marshall from that year, showed by 1982 that the organism, later named Helicobacter pylori, was present in 77 percent of the ulcer patients and 55 percent of the gastritis patients in their combined sample of one hundred biopsies. He shared the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Marshall.
