Baron Emil von Dungern was a German internist, born in Würzburg in 1867 and died in Bodman-Ludwigshafen in 1961. He worked at the Heidelberg Institute for Experimental Cancer Research, where he directed the scientific section. His research assistant there from 1907 to 1911 was Ludwik Hirszfeld, who became the co-discoverer of the heritability of the ABO blood groups, and Hirszfeld recalled him in his work Historia as a spiritual poet who had to fall in love with a problem in order to be able to work on it, a flame burning from within. The source for this entry is brief, so it records his dates, his place of work and his relationship with Hirszfeld, and it claims nothing further about his clinical or laboratory results beyond what that account states.
