Medical Microbiology

Genetics, Immunology and Microbiological Sciences
Origin Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was the first to observe microorganisms under a microscope, in 1676; the germ-theory foundations of the modern field are usually credited to Louis Pasteur, whose 1857 work led to vaccines against anthrax, cholera and rabies, and to Robert Koch, called the father of medical bacteriology, whose postulates linking a microbe to a disease date from 1876 to 1884.

Medical microbiology is the branch of medical science concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious disease, studying the bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that cause it. This atlas records what the historical record supports and is not medical advice.
