Louis Pasteur was a French chemist and microbiologist whose experiments disproving spontaneous generation and demonstrating that specific microbes cause specific fermentations and diseases established germ theory on firm experimental ground. He also developed the process later named pasteurization and produced the first vaccine against rabies. Not a practicing physician himself, his work nonetheless reshaped clinical medicines understanding of infection. This atlas records what the historical record supports and is not medical advice.

Cross-Tradition Connections

Associated With

Robert Koch, Healers

Historians document both real personal and national rivalry between Koch and Pasteur, sharpened by Franco-Prussian War-era politics, and genuine scientific complementarity: their work together formed the basis of modern germ theory.

Discoveries

Why this is disputed. Pasteur is the healer entity this atlas holds, credited jointly, alongside Robert Koch (not yet a separate entity in this atlas), for establishing germ theory experimentally.

Specialist In

Attenuated vaccine development, most notably the rabies vaccine, places Pasteur work inside the immunological tradition alongside the bacteriological work already recorded on this atlas.
