The Pasteur Institute is a French nonprofit research foundation dedicated to the study of infectious disease, established in Paris in 1887 and formally opened on November 14, 1888. It grew directly out of Louis Pasteur's rabies vaccination work: after he treated nine-year-old Joseph Meister, bitten by a rabid dog, in July 1885, patients seeking the treatment arrived from around the world in numbers that required a dedicated facility, funded by international public subscription. This atlas records what the historical record supports and is not medical advice.
