John D. Rockefeller founded the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in June 1901, America's first biomedical research institute, following the European models of the Pasteur Institute (1888) and the Robert Koch Institute (1891). Its first director of laboratories, Simon Flexner, built its research capacity, and its staff went on to major discoveries in basic research and medicine. The institute began awarding PhD degrees in 1954 and was formally renamed The Rockefeller University in 1965.
