Gabriel Anton (1858 to 1933) was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, born in Saaz in Bohemia, who received his medical doctorate at Prague in 1882. He worked in Vienna under Theodor Meynert, became associate professor of psychiatry and clinic director at Innsbruck in 1891, professor at Graz in 1894, and in 1905 succeeded Karl Wernicke at the University of Halle. He is remembered for studies of psychiatric conditions arising from damage to the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia, and the Anton-Babinski syndrome, in which a patient is unaware of or denies a body part or blindness, bears his name. With surgeons he proposed new procedures for treating hydrocephalus, the Balkenstich method and the suboccipital puncture.
