Eduard Albert (1841 to 1900) was a Czech surgeon, professor and medical historian. Born in Žamberk in Bohemia, the son of a clockmaker, he studied medicine at the University of Vienna and took his doctorate there in 1867, learning under Salomon Stricker and Johann von Dumreicher. From 1873 to 1881 he was professor of surgery at Innsbruck, where he introduced mandatory antiseptic treatment of wounds, and in 1881 he took the chair of surgery at Vienna, which he held until 1900. He is remembered for pioneering work in orthopedic surgery, especially arthrodesis of the tarsal and shoulder joints for paralysis and for recurring dislocations. His better known students included Adolf Lorenz, Emerich Ullmann and Antonio Grossich, who in 1908 introduced the application of 10 percent tincture of iodine to the operative field. His books include a textbook on diagnosing surgical diseases (1876). He died of a stroke in Žamberk in 1900.
