Sujoy K. Guha

Sujoy Kumar Guha is an Indian biomedical engineer born in Patna in 1940 and regarded as one of the founders of biomedical engineering in India. He combined an electrical engineering background from IIT Kharagpur and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with an MBBS from the University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi University, and a PhD in medical physiology from St. Louis University, and he founded the Centre for Biomedical Engineering before later becoming a chair professor at IIT Kharagpur. Guha's best known contribution is RISUG, a non-hormonal polymer based injectable male contraceptive, for which Phase III clinical trials were completed in 2019 after decades of development. His broader work has spanned rehabilitation engineering, bioengineering for reproductive medicine and technology for rural health care, and he was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honor, in 2020.
